How do you get bandwidth for a website if you host your own site on your own server?

    • Taba says:

The bandwidth on your local server is regulated by your ISP. To get more bandwidth you would need to contact your ISP.

Now as soon as you do that your ISP will tell you that you will have to upgrade to one of there business class packages because they want to charge you for all the connections to your server. This could get expensive.

make your own server to host a website?
hey. i have Windows XP and until yesterday i had always thought that, in order to have your own website, you need to buy a domain and stuff from GoDaddy or some website.

I just found out that anyone can make their own website for free if they make their own server. Does this take up a lot of space on the computer? is it expensive? does it require a ton of computer knowledge?

where can i find out about how to get started?

Vastly simplified, but it works like this(I have one just like you’re asking about)
1)Take some old pc you have, and load webserver software on it. If you have a copy of xp pro, it has that built in. its called IIS and is not installed by default. There are several other free webserver programs you can use.
2)Give your server a hard assigned ip address. for example, if your router gives out ip addresses starting at 192.168.1.100, give your server the ip address 192.168.1.99
That way, no pc on your network will ever get that address.
3)Setup port forwarding on your router to route port 80 to 192.168.1.99
that way all web requests will be set to your new server.
Please note some ISP’s prohibit you running a webserver at home..so be warned. they might actually block port 80. if so set your server to runat some other port, like port 81. Adjust router port forwarding as needed.
4)Open an account on http://www.dyndns.org(or something similar). They let you get a webname for free(please make SOME sort of donation). They’re the one that will translate
http://www.yourname.dyndns.org to the ip address of your server.
5)Get hold of one of the freeware ip address updating programs that works with dyndns. This software tells dyndns what your current ip address is. Its needed in case your isp changes your external ip address from time to time.
6)code a webpage, tell people your address.

How do you host your own website using a server?
In my research I found plenty of youtube videos explaining apache and FTP severs. My question really is how do you use a physical server, such as the HP ProLiant Micro Server, to host your web site so it can run all day without me having to keep my computer on.

There are many things needed to host your own website. Here’s a very brief list of just a few things you need:

      Hardware
These are the very, very basic requirements

      1. Broadband internet access – a company would likely opt for the reliability of a T1 or T3 line, however you could use pretty much anything for this including cable or dsl. which brings me to….
      2. Static IP address – your internet service provider typically provides a dynamic IP address. You have to have a static IP if you plan on others accessing your site. There are ways around this, but they typically cost as much or more then just upgrading to a static IP through your ISP.

      Software

There are many routes you could go regarding software. You could buy Windows Server, or you could go the more reliable and cheaper route of using Apache. Apache is the most popular and common of the two, with windows server/IIS a close second.

I hope this helps some. I tried to make it as basic as possible, but if you need more specific information, you can check the link below.
